Description. Rest harrow has branched shrub to 80 cm tall. It grows short, dark brown rhizome and roots side branches. Lower and middle leaves are lobed and above simple equipped. The shares are oval, the edge sharp, serrated on both sides hairy, sticky, with unpleasant smell. The flowers are collected in two bosoms of the leaves and form on the tops dense class clusters . Corolla is pink, wrongly, 2 times longer than the cup. The fruit is beans with 2-4 seeds. It blooms from June to July.

Distribution. Occurs in dry sandy and grassy places all over  the country.

Drugs. The roots of harrow - Radix Ononidis.

The roots of the plant harrow gather before flowering (April-May) or after flowering (August-October). They are easily removed after the rain when towing a single branch. Cleaned, washed and dried in the sun or in a drying oven at temperatures up to 50-60 ° C. The dried roots are gray-brown on the outside and pale yellow inside with smell and wishy-peppery flavor. Packed in bales. They are stored in a shady, well-ventilated, dry place. Moisture can contain no more than 12%.

Chemical composition. The roots of the harrow contain about 0.2% essential oil of unknown composition, flavones glycosides ononin, pseudoononin, Onon River and ononid (which has a sweet taste), tannins, sucrose, citric acid, samonini, resinous substances and others.

Action and use. The main action of the harrow is a diuretic, diaphoretic and laxative. It prescribes the essential oil. Harrow preparations are used primarily in fluid retention in the body - heart failure, kidney inflammation and edema of any origin, obesity. Have a good effect in renal stone disease and gallstones. It was found that lower blood pressure and increase the amplitude of cardiac contractions. Pharmacologically proven that water and alcoholic extracts of Restharrow reduce permeability and fragility of capillaries, which gives reason to apply a styptic hemorrhoids, varicose veins and others.

Folk medicine recommends the roots of harrow and to treat rheumatism, blood pissing, infertility, gout and spikes.

Usage. Recommended harrow can be used in the form of an infusion in order to keep the content of essential oil. Two tablespoons roots harrow is brewed with 400 ml. boiling water. Leave to soak for 30 min. After straining infusion of drink 3 times daily 70-120 ml. after eating 10 days in a row. Treatment was stopped for 7 days, and then repeated again for 10 days.
